Value of the month: Hard Conversations<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hard conversations suck! It may be telling someone we don\u2019t like what they\u2019re doing, telling family we\u00a0<\/span>can\u2019t make it for Thanksgiving, even simply telling our kids \u201cNo\u201d. It may be related to our jobs \u2013 asking\u00a0<\/span>for a raise or setting a boundary with a co-worker. Talking to our kids about drugs, sex, college, mean\u00a0<\/span>friends, and even death. Life is filled with hard conversations.<\/span><\/p>

It seems as though the hard conversations are the most important ones. They\u2019re hard because they\u00a0matter. They\u2019re hard because they involve deep feelings. They\u2019re hard because there is a lot on the line.<\/span><\/p>

No one wants to hurt someone\u2019s feelings nor do we want to make someone mad at us, but those are by-products of healthy communication. You may not like what I have to say, but it\u2019s still important for me\u00a0<\/span>to say it. We will get through the feelings.<\/span><\/p>

How does your family handle the subject of death or illness? Is it something that\u2019s never mentioned for\u00a0fear of inviting it in? Is it spoken about openly and frequently?<\/span><\/p>

There is actually a concept of a \u201cgood death\u201d. A good death not only is painless and peaceful, but it also\u00a0includes having lots of hard conversations. Talking about wishes for belongings, funerals, end-of-life\u00a0<\/span>care, apologies and long-unexpressed feelings, etc\u2026 A big piece of what makes a death \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d\u00a0<\/span>is the amount and quality of communication.<\/span><\/p>

I think the same is true for any and all relationships. What makes it healthy or not is the amount and\u00a0quality of the communication.<\/span><\/p>

So, keep those conversations going. Don\u2019t shy away from the hard ones. Be brave. Be persistent.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
