What’s your “Bruno”?\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>

Many of you have watched\u00a0the Disney movie,\u00a0Encanto,\u00a0by now and have heard the song, \u201cWe Don\u2019t Talk About Bruno, No, No, No\u2026\u201d \u00a0Does it get stuck in your head like it does in mine???<\/div>

So many people have that \u201cthing\u201d that they just don\u2019t talk about. That thing that brings shame. That thing that the family never mentions or the secret that\u00a0no one or\u00a0not everyone in the family knows. \u00a0It could be an earth-shattering, life-altering\u00a0subject or it could just be a smaller thing that feels too big to share or too embarrassing to mention.\u00a0<\/p>

As a therapist, I\u2019ve worked with many families around secrets that they feel they should have known or should have known sooner. \u00a0The sense of betrayal that people feel from secrets is very damaging to relationships and to families.\u00a0Sometimes, learning of the secret is what does the damage! It\u2019s a fine line to travel.<\/p>

You\u2019ve heard the phrase \u201cthe truth will set you free\u201d. It\u2019s actually true, for the most part.\u00a0As a parenting specialist, I get a lot of calls about how to talk to their kids about\u00a0illness, sexuality,\u00a0death,\u00a0suicide,\u00a0divorce, addiction, adoption\u00a0and so many other topics. \u00a0I always recommend telling kids\u00a0the truth\u00a0to the degree that they can developmentally handle\u00a0it. \u00a0Sometimes the details are too much for little ones, but as they grow, they need to know more about the situation and not be left in the dark, only to find out accidentally later and feel angry, betrayed, lied to, etc\u2026<\/p>

So, what\u2019s your \u201cBruno\u201d?\u00a0What should you be talking about more often to set you free or to ensure that\u00a0others feel honoredor seen?\u00a0Are you open\u00a0for\u00a0your nearest and dearest people to share their secrets with you?\u00a0Are you a safe place to land? Do you have a safe place to land?\u00a0<\/p>

The weight of carrying secrets for years (which get heavier over time)\u00a0can be quite a burden. If you need support, don\u2019t hesitate to reach out to me or another mental health practitioner.\u00a0It\u00a0just might be the greatest gift you can give yourself.<\/div>
