It’s Back to School time! FINALLY!!! For the first time in a year and a half, kids are getting their needs met with full-day schooling. Their development is finally getting fed. Their academic needs are finally being fulfilled. They are getting that social stimulation that makes their brains grow, develop, and make synapses connect like crazy as a growing brain so desperately craves!
The anxiety that kids are feeling after so many months in the cozy arms of home and family is off the charts! As a result, parents are feeling it, too.
Social anxiety got a rest while kids were at home and didn’t have to navigate the social hierarchies and playground stresses.
Going back is scary. Having to use the muscles that haven’t been flexed in some time is super stressful.
I encourage you all to use as much patience as possible. Stay as calm as possible no matter how
much your kids are losing it. Have compassion for this difficult transition and know that it will take some time for kids to adapt.
Your only job right now is to show up for them. Be present. Listen. Validate their feelings and
experiences. You don’t have to fix anything, you just need to bear witness for them. Love them through the bumpy parts and remind them that they’re fabulous.
There may even be a honeymoon period and then the struggles will show themselves. Whatever it is for your kids, be ready; be patient; be kind and trust that all will be well.
