It’s Back to School month! Bittersweet for many families. The refreshing structure returns but gone are the lazy days and late nights of leisure and ice cream. When there’s lots of anxiety in the air, kids and parents trigger each other and often set each other off in ugly ways.
Anticipate the kids’ anxieties and recognize it when you see it. It can come disguised as anger, defiance, stubbornness, or any challenging behavior.
Make sure you are well-cared-for, rested, fed and have extra time and energy to deal with their feelings.
Rather than punishing or getting angry at them, have lots of compassion and patience for their struggles. They really can’t help it!
Reflect with them about the uncertainty a new school year brings and how hard that is for everyone.
Connect, connect, connect!! The more understanding you show and love you give, the better able your kids will be to get through the tough times. Your balance contributes to their balance.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if I can support you through any challenges. Wishing everyone a great and successful school year!!
