Happy February, Everyone!
It’s the month of Love…at least it’s the month of Valentine’s Day; an opportunity to express our love in many ways, and to give small gifts. Valentine’s Day, though many people think of it as a silly Hallmark holiday, is kind of cool, if you think about it. How often do kids in school express their friendship and care for one another by giving Valentines to each other? So sweet!!
Valentine’s Day is also a time for some people to be sad. Recent breakups, loneliness, loneliness inside of relationships, loss, hurt, disappointment, and so much more. I challenge everyone to find LOVE in any way that works. Feel and express love for a dear friend, a dear relative, a loyal pet or even celebrate an inanimate object – the blessing of a reliable car, a protective home, a beloved coat, a family heirloom, etc… Remember, love can be expressed and felt in so many ways.
Let’s use this February to teach our kids and to learn about love. Here are a few tips:
· Look for LOVE every chance you get – where is it hiding that you hadn’t thought of as love before? Watch for people hugging, smiling, laughing, showing kindness; even tears can show love.
· Express love 100 times a day – who haven’t you told lately or who really needs to hear it right now? We can even express love for some things (after love for people) – a comfy bed, a cozy blanket, etc…
· What do YOU love? Are you passionate about something that you haven’t prioritized lately? Painting? Creating? Writing? Designing? Inventing? Running? Reading? Cooking? Gardening? You get my point. GO DO THAT! It’s how you show love to yourself and spread love to the world!
· What do your kids love? Do you even know? Sometimes, as parents we get caught up in the day-to-day custodial aspects of life and we forget to nurture what makes our kids sparkle. Help them to find their own passions; then encourage and nourish them.
Happy Valentine’s Day, to my very loving and loyal Balanced Parenting tribe! I send you my gratitude and my wishes for love in your lives in any ways you wish for yourselves.
I love you!
